The By-Laws of the Orphan House of Charleston, South Carolina were revised and adopted by the Board of Commissioners on April 4, 1861, and approved by the City Council of Charleston on April 23, 1861.  Established originally in 1790, the Charleston Orphan House had provided care, maintenance, and education to over 2,300 destitute and orphaned children by the time these 1861 bylaws were enacted.

Printed by Evans & Cogswell in Charleston, the 40-page document outlines the administrative framework, rules, and operational procedures of the institution. Adopted at the very onset of the American Civil War, the text also includes a historical record listing the 148 commissioners who served the institution from its founding in 1790 through 1861.  Condition is good overall, with only light wear to the front cover. 3 small, horizontal tears are noted along the spine – two of which continue through the book.  Single string binding remains complete and tight.  Dimensions are 5.8” x 8.9”.

A rare link to an important institution, time, and place of the old South – just as Civil War began.   [cm][ph:L]
