Original 1903 printing. "Appomattox. Paper Read before the New York Commandery, Loyal Legion of the United States. October Seventh, 1903. By General Joshua L. Chamberlain." [N.p., 1903.] Gray printed wrappers lettered "Appomattox / General Joshua L. Chamberlain," wire-stitched, the text concluding on page 21. Approximately 6 x 9 inches. Identical to the Library of Congress copy.
Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain – colonel of the 20th Maine at Little Round Top, recipient of the Medal of Honor, and brevet major general by the close of the war – commanded the Union troops designated to receive the formal surrender of arms and colors of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House on April 12, 1865. In this paper, delivered to his fellow companions of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion in New York nearly four decades later, he recounts the closing action of April 9 and the ceremony three days afterward, at which his line came to the carry in salute to the passing Confederate columns. The address closes on the theme of reconciliation for which Chamberlain is best remembered: "It was our glory only that the victory we had won was for country; for the well-being of others, of these men before us as well as for ourselves and ours." The same events were later treated at length in his posthumously published The Passing of the Armies (1915).
