Scarce early biographical pamphlet on Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, colonel of the 20th Maine at Little Round Top, Medal of Honor recipient, brevet major general, Governor of Maine and President of Bowdoin College. A shorter version of this sketch was prepared for the Report of the Chamberlain Association of America, the family's genealogical society, and appeared there in abbreviated form, generally dated 1905. The present printing restores the full text and adds supplementary material in the form of notes. The prefatory note explains that a reprint having been called for, it was thought proper to give the entire article, with acknowledgments to those who procured material or assisted in its preparation. Published during Chamberlain's lifetime, the sketch is long regarded as reflecting his own close involvement, and it remains a primary source for his life.

Printed tan wrappers with the title lettered on the front cover, wire-stitched. Frontispiece halftone portrait of Chamberlain in later life, in profile, captioned "Joshua L. Chamberlain, Major-General U. S. Vols." Title page reads "Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain / A Sketch / (Reprint, with Additions)." A pencil notation at the upper right of the title page records "200 copies printed." 41 pages. The notes include a list of the principal titles among Chamberlain's addresses and writings, grouped under "Relating to the War" (among them "Dead on the Field of Honor," "The Old Flag, and What It Stands For," "The Last Night at Fredericksburg," "The Defence of Round Top," "Five Forks," "Appomattox" and "The Grand Review") and miscellaneous subjects ranging from "The Nile in History" to "Robert Burns."

This copy is unopened: the leaves remain uncut at the top folds exactly as issued, never read. Approximately 5 1/2 x 7 7/8 inches.

CONDITION

Very good. Wrappers lightly toned and soiled with minor edge wear and a small spot at the lower front. Text block toned, heavier on some leaves, clean and complete. Leaves unopened at the top edge as issued.    [ss][ph:L]
