This is the official state roster of every Massachusetts man who served in the Union army and navy, compiled by the Adjutant General's office from the original muster-in rolls, muster-out reports, and casualty reports. Arranged by unit, each regiment and battery is introduced with a concise service history, followed by a complete roster giving each soldier's name, age, residence, occupation, dates of enlistment and muster, promotions, and final disposition, whether discharged, wounded, killed, died of disease, deserted, or mustered out. The Index to Army Records ties the whole set together, making it possible to locate any individual across all eight volumes.

For collectors of Massachusetts identified material, this set is the essential first stop for researching a name on a CDV, letter, discharge, or inscribed relic. It is equally valuable to genealogists and to anyone studying the Bay State regiments, from the 6th Massachusetts in Baltimore in April 1861 through the 54th and 55th Massachusetts and the cavalry and artillery commands.

The set was printed in a limited state run; the printer's code on the Vol. I title page (2m-11-'30) indicates 2,000 copies printed in November 1930. Complete sets with the Index volume are increasingly hard to find, since many were broken up or went to libraries.

Condition: Publisher's uniform navy blue cloth, gilt-stamped spine titles and volume numbers, with the gilt Massachusetts state seal and Greek key borders at the head and tail of each spine. Overall a good, sound, matching set with typical shelf wear. The Index volume shows heavy chipping and fraying at the head of the spine with some loss of cloth. Vols. III and IV show rubbing and wear at the foot of the spine. There is light scuffing and spotting on the other spines, with gilt remaining bright. Interiors are clean, with the expected light toning to the page edges, and the title page of Vol. I is clean and unmarked. Bindings are tight.

Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines in the Civil War. Compiled and Published by the Adjutant General in Accordance with Chapter 475, Acts of 1899 and Chapter 64, Resolves of 1930. Norwood, Mass.: Printed at the Norwood Press, 1931–1937. Eight volumes (I–VIII, 1931–1935) plus the separately issued Index to Army Records (1937), for a complete set of nine.
