The distinctive cabin-shaped E.G. Booz Whiskey bottle is certainly one of the most famous of American bottles, and the most reproduced. This bottle was made by the Clevenger brothers, who made the best copy in 1930. This is a much more affordable version than a real period example which would be priced around $3500.00; you will be hard-pressed to tell the difference. An article providing detailed information about the Clevenger Brothers may be read here.
Lettering on roof reads, “E.G. BOOZ’S OLD CABIN WHISKEY / 1840”. Sides read, “E.G. BOOZ’S OLD CABIN WHISKEY / 120 WALNUT ST. / PHILADELPHIA”.
The original "E. G. Booz's Old Cabin Whiskey" bottles were made for one Edmund G. Booz (c. 1824–1870), a Philadelphia distiller, by the Whitney Glass Works of Glassboro, New Jersey around 1860. It is thought that the 1840 date refers to the age of the whiskey in the bottle. The Whitney Glass works appears to have produced these bottles for as many as 12 years.
Bottle measures approx. 8” high x 4” wide x 2 7/8” deep. Underside of bottle shows an indented circle. Very good condition with no chips, just light surface cracking at one of the lower corners. [SL/ld]
