This piece is a heavy Pittsburgh cone shaped pillar molded bar bottle with a strong gray tint, 8 vertical ribs and a polish pontil. It is slightly smaller than the usual quart bottles, standing 10 1/16" high.    From the way the heavy bar lip is made this bottle can be reasonably attributed to the McKee Bros. factory, 1850-1870.  The color is the result of too much manganese in the formula, which gives it this dark off-color. To many collectors this attribute is highly desirable.  Early bar bottles did not have glass stoppers, so this bottle is complete as-is.  By the 1850s bar bottles were found in hotels, taverns, on steamships and probably also on trains throughout the US.  Because the wide base prevents it from easily tipping over, these pillar mold bar bottles have been traditionally associated with saloons on steamships.   [lj/ld]  [ph:L]
