This piece is a small Rockingham ware spittoon 3 1/2" tall, and 6 ¾” in diameter at the base; produced by E & W Bennett Co, Baltimore MD 1856-1870. This iconic Baltimore spittoon with 12 flat panes with acanthus leaves was extremely popular in Maryland and southern PA. Bennett created the most beautiful Rockingham glaze used in the US. The piece was first fired with a colorless glaze allowing the yellow color of the base clay to show through. The piece was then splashed with a dark brown glaze that ran and puddled differently on each piece before it was fired again. Though the molded decoration is always the same, the way the second glaze dripped is different, making each piece unique. [lj/ld][ph:L]
