Blown amber whiskey bottle with an applied handle and open pontil, 8 7/8" tall. The front of the bottle has an applied seal marked "Chestnut Grove Whiskey C. W." Note the misspelling of Chestnut, which appears on all of the applied seal bottles. This bottle was made for Charles Wharton, Jr, a Philadelphia merchant who created a blend of local whiskeys that he called Chestnut Grove. Wharton was among the first merchants to sell whiskey in bottles specially marked with his name and product. This bottle, one of the first designs that he used, was made between 1858-1870 by the Whitney Glass Works in Glassboro, NJ. At some point, the neck broke and has been repaired. [lj] [ph:L]
