Heavy middle period cut goblet, 5 3/4" tall with a polished pontil.  It was probably made in the Wheeling, WV area 1840-1860. Pieces from the American middle period of cut glass are extremely heavy and are only decorated with wide cut panels or large, simple geometric designs.  This type glassware complemented the heavy gothic furniture made for large Greek Revival houses built during that period.  [lj][ph:L]
