Pair of celery vases with cylindrical bowls and slightly flaring rims, applied baluster stems and round applied feet with polished pontils.   United States, probably Wheeling, WV 1869-1880.  The bowls are engraved with naturalistic foliage.  The vases are 9" tall.  Serving celery at the dining room table became popular in England and America in the early 19th century and continued throughout the century.  When not in use, the vases were placed on the mantel or sideboard where they could also have been used to hold cut flowers.   [lj][ph:L]
