Cut middle period American water pitcher 1830-1855, 9" tall, probably Wheeling, VA (now WV). The middle period of American glass is characterized by large, heavy pieces, cut with broad flutes or simple geometric patterns. This pitcher, which is cut with 11 broad flutes, also has a facet-cut band around the neck that adds interest to an otherwise stark piece. Wheeling was the epicenter of middle period glass; the Ritchie and Sweeney factories being the most prominent. The base has been polished to remove the pontil scar. It possibly has had some post-production polishing to the foot and rim of the pitcher. [lj][ph:L]
