Rockingham glaze spittoon made in Bennington VT 1850-1870. Rockingham glaze was perfected in Baltimore before the Civil War and was quickly was adopted by potters around the country. The particular waisted shape of this spittoon, with 12 indented panels, identifies it as a Bennington product. The size of the spittoon, this one is 10 1/4" wide, determined where it was used. Hotels and other public building had very large vessels, much larger than this one. Small, or medium size spittoons, like this one, were intended for more intimate spaces and private homes. Spittoons were a fixture in all American buildings until the outbreak of the Spanish Flu in the early 20th century. Chewing tobacco was a vice indulged in by all levels of society at that time. There is a hairline crack on the top of this spittoon, which is not uncommon since they were often cleaned in hot water. [lj][ph:L]
