Federal Voltigeur coat button, eagle with “V” in shield. Two-piece, convex button, coat size, 20mm. Heavy, straight shank. Backmark, “SCOVILLS & CO / WATERBURY”.
Voltigeurs were a special unit engaged during the Mexican War and disbanded at the end of the war. Some of these buttons may have been issued later to state militia units, including Virginia. Many examples recovered from Civil War sites.
