This very good, non-excavated button shows a standing eagle in high relief with raised wings and upward craning neck on a finely lined ground surrounded by eleven five-pointed stars symbolizing the seceded states. The eagle stands on a narrow plinth. The button face has a wide, raised border. The reverse is marked “EXTRA RICH” and “TREBLE GILT” separated by single dots and between an outer dotted border and inner two-line incised border running around the shank. The condition is excellent, showing a lot of orange gilt on the face with some rubs to the border and high points of the figure (knees, lower wing tips, and chest) that show a reddish brown. The back has some minor age stains. The shank is in place and intact. This is Albert’s CS-5 A 4 and Tice’s CS205A5, illustrated in plate E-1 as number 6. This was formerly in the Texas Civil War Museum and is a nice example of the die-sinker’s art. [sr][ph:L]
