Non-dug, very good example of this well-made, two-piece convex button manufactured and dated 1861 by W.G. Mintzer of Philadelphia. This features the state arms on the face- three pillars supporting an arch bearing the word "Constitution," with the pillars wrapped "Wisdom," "Justice," and "Moderation.” The arch is part of a dome emblazoned with a sun shining its rays downward. A guard with drawn sword stands between the pillars at left. The ground at bottom and the band running just above the columns is stippled, as is the depressed channel on the reverse, bearing in raised letters, “[Star] W.G. MINTZER . PHILA 1861.”  The shank is in place; no dents or dings to the face or back; very nice condition.  Albert’s GA2; Tice GA203A1. A rather interesting button in that although hostilities did not break out until April, Georgia had begun seizing federal installations in early January, and seceded in mid-March, with the Confederate government calling upon it for troops as early as March 9.  [sr][ph:L]
