This excellent condition artifact is a rare, non-excavated, Confederate imported Block “R” brass button as worn on Southern enlisted rifleman’s uniforms. The coat-size artillery button is of two-piece construction with an edge bordered brass face in choice condition. Classed as a ‘CS 201A / RV 40’ in A.H. Albert’s reference volume, this circular, 25-mm brass specimen exhibits a fine, stippled Roman block letter “A” displayed on a plain, unlined background. Gold gilded face exhibits a smooth bright sheen and is free of any blemishes. Reverse is sharply backmarked with “H T & B / MANCHESTER.” Shank is strong and very tight. Slight area of light oxidation at the shank. This seldom seen, non-dug specimen of an original Confederate uniform block “R” button is in superb condition and would highlight any Civil War button collection or Confederate display. [ra][ph:L]
