This is an authentic 1861 dated Confederate States of America $10.00 note. This is listed as T-24 in Criswell's Confederate Currency book.
In the lower left-hand corner is the likeness of Robert M.T. Hunter who served as Confederate Secretary of State and a C.S. Senator. Before the War he was a U.S. Congressman and Senator from Virginia. In the lower right-hand corner is a baby portrait of Rev. Dr. Alfred L Elwyn, an abolitionist, as child that hung in the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. (I don’t know how this ended up on a CSA bank note.)
“TEN / 10 / X X” and repeated microprinted “TEN DOLLARS” are on the face in orange. The note retains nice color tone and contrast. Numbered (6169) and signed in brown ink. Blank back. Watermarked paper, a few pin holes, light wrinkling, and some light staining. Centered and trimmed well.
It was issued from Richmond, Virginia and has the printed date of September 2nd of 1861. The note has a very nice look. [jet][ph:L]
