A “Treasury Warrant" refers to a piece of state-issued paper money, from the Civil War era, that served as a form of currency backed by the state's credit to finance its activities during the conflict. These warrants were often used for military and civil service.
This is a Treasury Warrant, $10 denomination, numbered and filled out in brown ink. Serial numbered 24098, by the Act of Dec. 16, 1863, and dated August 18, 1864. Green highlights. Paid to J. Van Nostrand. Signed on back “C.H. Randolph.” Excellent condition with no pin holes, wrinkles, folds. Nice color and contrast.
The payee of this note was Jacob Van Nostrand, born in New York City on the 27th of February, 1814. When young he prepared himself for the ministry, but he changed his mind, and became a teacher in the New York Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, remaining there until he was called to Texas in the year 1857, where he acted as Superintendent, Principal and Steward at the Texas School for the Deaf for 19 years.
