The Salmon Falls Bank was incorporated on July 3, 1851, by the Mason & Lawrence Company of Boston, owners of the nearby Salmon Falls Manufacturing Company. The mill built the bank and local housing to attract textile workers to the village. The bank operated independently for over a century until 1964, when it merged with the Somersworth Bank to become the Somersworth-Rollinsford Savings Bank. The bank operated during the "Free Banking Era" before a centralized national currency and issued its own paper banknotes.
Offered here is one of those Salmon Falls Bank notes, being a $2 note. This features beautifully detailed, hand-cut vignettes of George Washington on horseback. Note is crisp and clean; no folds, pin holes, or wrinkles. Centered well and unsigned/undated. Large red “TWO” overprint; blank back.
A nice clean 19th century New Hampshire note. [jet][ph:L]
