The 1862 Confederate States of America $1 note (Catalog #T-55) is a prominent piece of Civil War currency featuring a portrait of Clement Claiborne Clay, a senator from Alabama. Issued out of Richmond, Virginia, with a printed date of December 2, 1862, this "pink paper" note was printed by Keatinge & Ball in Columbia, South Carolina.

This note features a central portrait of Senator Clement Claiborne Clay. The front is printed in black ink on distinctive light pink paper, while the back is completely blank. Signatures and serial number (17037) in brown ink from Treasury clerks.

Part of the "5th Series" of Confederate currency issues. It was widely circulated to provide low-denomination change during severe wartime inflation.

Very fine condition with only two pin holes, no folds, and centered fairly well. [jet][ph:L]
