An original and very interesting Louisiana Civil War bank note.
Front features a bold, arched "The State of Louisiana" title with a bright green "3 / THREE" overprint. It depicts a small image of a beehive (symbolizing industry) with “BATON ROUGE” printed between the signature lines. The Inscription at top is "Receivable for all dues to the State" and promises payment to the bearer "Twelve Months after a definitive Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States & the United States"—an event that never came to fruition.
Of special interest is what is on the back. Due to the Union naval blockade, the South faced extreme paper shortages. To compensate, the State of Louisiana was forced to print these $3 bills directly onto the backs of leftover, unissued bank note sheets from other institutions—most notably vivid blue sheets from the Exchange Bank of Holly Springs, Mississippi.
Note is in very fine condition, signed and numbered in brown ink. Centered well with no pin holes, folds, or wrinkles. An attractive piece. [jet][ph:L]
