The Soldiers' Wayside Home in Charleston, South Carolina, was a vital Confederate relief institution that housed and fed 43,000 soldiers between its founding on August 1, 1863, and September 7, 1864. Run by a local executive committee, the home provided essential aid to traveling, sick, or destitute soldiers during the Civil War. It also protected the wives and daughters of soldiers who were visiting nearby hospitals or military camps. On September 7, 1864, the executive committee published a prominent broadside titled Appeal in behalf of the "Soldiers' Wayside Home," of Charleston, SC. The document begged private citizens and the state at large for financial assistance to keep the doors open. To cope with hyperinflation and the lack of official currency, the home issued paper scrip (including this $1 note) dated May 1, 1864.
Offered here is a well-worn specimen of the $1 note. Signed and numbered in brown ink. Centered well. Worn and slightly faded, but a rare original example of a “Soldiers’ Home” note from Charleston. [jet][ph:L]
