27 pieces, plus Xeroxed pages from the “Narrative of Eighth Regiment,” by William H. Houlton [pp. 386-415, taken from “Minnesota in the Civil and Indian Wars,” authorized by the State Legislature, St. Paul, MN, 1890]—containing full regimental roster.

This Minnesota unit was organized in the fall of 1862 in response to the Chippewa and Sioux Indian uprising of that year. Mustered in by companies, these sent in the vicinity of the Indian raids, with Company “C” assigned to Ft. Abercrombie under Major Camp. These soldiers were posted in small squads patrolling the frontier, engaging the Indians in many slight skirmishes. While losing a number of men.

As mounted infantry the regiment joined Sully’s Expedition against the Sioux in May 1864, the several companies coming together for the first time. The Indians had been driven west of the Missouri the previous summer and the 8th joined Sully’s command in early July and were engaged at the Battle of Killdeer Mountain, where the Indians were defeated and driven into the mountains. Sully’s expedition then moved into the Badlands and on August 5th was attacked by 5,000 Sioux, who were driven for 12 miles, with a loss of nearly 1000, the troops losing about 100, only 9 of whom were killed. This battle was called “Waps-chon-choka” by the Indians.

The Expedition reached the Yellowstone on the 12th and Fort Union on the 18th, before turning toward home for Ft. Snelling, arriving 15 October and leaving the state on the 26th, ordered to Murfreesboro, TN. While in the Murfreesboro vicinity they participated in a charge on the Wilkinson Pike that routed the enemy but at a loss of 90 in killed wounded with 30 minutes. After which it was attached to the 23rd Corps, which followed Hood’s Confederates to the Tennessee River.

From Tennessee, the 8th was ordered to North Carolina, reaching New Berne in March 1865. It participated in the Battle Kinston, where Bragg’s force was repeatedly repulsed. Occupying Goldsboro on March 22nd, the unit joined Sherman’s forces and was assigned provost duty at Raleigh until May 12, and then moved to Charlotte enroute home to be mustered out July 11, 1865. During service the 8th Minnesota lost 27 men killed and mortally wounded and 56 by disease for a total of 83.
