The Confederate Government of Wythe County, Virginia issued this allotment check, numbered 943 on the back and dated August 11, 1863 to Mrs. James Hoback in the amount of four dollars for the family of James Hoback, a soldier in the 51st Virginia Regiment. Signed by Tho. H. Simmerman, Com. for 8 district. Countersigned on the reverse, what looks to be “Nathe Shelton / X / His Mark”.
Note that this check is not pre-printed; this was probably before they received stamps to pre-print the checks.
On 4/1/62 Hoback mustered into "C" Co., 51st VA as a private. Date and method of discharge not given. [ld] [ph:L]
