Item is a framed certificate of a patron’s donation to the construction of the Lincoln Monument. The monument is illustrated here on the certificate. Construction of the monument began on September 10, 1869 under the architecture and design of Larkin G. Meade Jr. Its construction consisted of a 117’ obelisk structure with four statues representing the Cavalry, Infantry, Navy, and Artillery at the base of the monument. The base of Lincoln’s tomb rests at the monument’s north end. Lincoln was placed in the tomb on September 19, 1871 along side his sons Tad, Eddie, and Willie. Mary Todd was later laid to rest next to her husband and children in 1882.
Item is in original wood frame, with gold gilt on the inner boarder. The gold gilt has significant paint chipping from wear and age. The frame measures 10 ¾” long, 7 ½” wide, and is just shy of an inch thick. There is a well-worn piece of tag wood that holds the image, loosely, in the frame, with tack nails to secure the wood in place. The frame is wood and was painted black. The bottom right outer corner the paint is chipped.
Image has certificate on bottom that reads “THIS CERTIFIES THAT/ MRS. SERA STONE/ HAS CONTRIBUTED FIFTY CENTS TO THE ERECTION/ OF A MONUMENT IN MEMORY OF/ABRAHAM LINCOLN/ OUR MARTYRED PRESIDENT./ SPRINGFIELD, ILL. 1869.” A signature of J.H Beveridge, treasurer, closes the certificate. [mk] [ph:L]
