This pre-printed document is filled out in ink and pays the father of Private Alonzo O. Witter of the 37th Alabama $138.13.
The one-page document meas. approx. 8.50 x 14.00 inches and is headed “CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA TREASURY DEPARTMENT, SECOND AUDITOR’S OFFICE NOV. 26, 1864” and says that James Witter of Chambers County, Alabama, the father of Alonzo who died on May 6, 1863, will be paid 138.13 due his son from October 31, 1862 to his date of death.
Document is in excellent condition with strong ink.
Alonzo Witter was born in Chambers County Alabama on February 24, 1843.
Witter enlisted in Captain T. J. Griffin’s Company I, 37th Alabama Infantry on April 30, 1862. At the time he was described as 19 years old, 5’ 3” tall with a fair complexion, gray eyes and light hair. By profession he was a student.
While Witter was with the regiment it saw action at Iuka, Corinth and Chickasaw Bayou.
The 37th was involved at Port Gibson on May 1, 1863 and Witter died at Vaughn’s Station (some records say Yazoo City) on May 6. The record is silent as to whether he died of wounds received at Port Gibson or of disease.
Today he rests in Lafayette Cemetery in Lafayette, Alabama. [ad] [ph:L]
