Dated “New Orleans, May 13, 1862. One page, 5” x 8. Slight chipping of left margin. Else fine. Text:
“It having come to the knowledge of the Commanding General that Friday next is proposed to be observed as a day of Fasting and prayer, in obedience to some supposed proclamation of one Jefferson Davis, in the several churches of this city it is ordered that no such observances be had. “Churches and Religious Houses are to be kept open as in time of profound peace,” but no religious exercises are to be had upon the supposed authority above mentioned / Major General Butler
It is ironic that two years prior to this order canceling New Orleans church services proposed by Confederate President Jefferson Davis, pro-slavery Democrat Benjamin had voted for Jefferson Davis’s nomination for the U.S. presidency at the 1860 party convention in Charleston. By the end of 1862 Butler’s New Orleans performance as Federal military governor had goaded Jefferson Davis into authorizing his summary execution if captured by rebel forces. [jp][ph:L]
