Bedford Brown was born June 6, 1795 in Caswell County, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1813, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1815 but did not practice. Instead he engaged in agriculture as a planter. He was a member of the North Carolina House of Commons, (1815-17, 23) and a member of North Carolina State Senate, (1828-29). In 1829, he was elected as a Jacksonian, to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Branch and serving until resignation in 1840. He was again a member of North Carolina State Senate, (1842, 58-60, 68). Retiring from politics, he engaged in agricultural pursuits, until his death at age 75. He is buried in the Brown Family Cemetery at Rose Hill in Locust Hill, North Carolina.

Brown was pro-Union in his sentiments until President Lincoln’s call for troops to put down the rebellion. After that time he backed secession.  [ad][ph:L]
