The 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek was a brutal but remarkable affair. US troops were surprised in their camps on October 19th, and were forced to abandon the field. Remarkably, and with the assistance of the charismatic General Sheridan, the fleeing troops rallied, shored up their defenses, and claimed a resounding victory. The battle effectively ended organized Confederate activity in the Shenandoah Valley and bolstered support for Lincoln on the eve of his reelection.
As the good news of victory swept the North, creative and enterprising individuals moved to popularize it. This song sheet was “Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1864, by J. MAGEE, 316 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia.” The cadence of the song appears to fit that of “Old Dan Tucker” and details the progression of the battle in a rhyming, and at times, whimsical pattern.
The sheet measures 8” x 5” and is in fine condition with no tears, damage, or folds. A very faint series of penciled numbers is visible at top right. All printing is blue and red with a patriotic motif. The reverse is blank.
A very neat piece of Civil War history that commemorates the Battle of Cedar Creek shortly after it took place. [cm][ph:L]
