Dated “Boston, Mass., Aug. 24 2863. Received Box, Marked Chas. A. Richardson, Co. A, 26th Mass, to be forwarded by this company to N. O. La. Freight __ 1.50.” Pre-printed form, in red ink. One page, 5.5” x 8.5. Exhibits fold-marks. Else VG.
An 18 year-old machinist, Charles Richardson enlisted as a private and was mustered into Co. “A”, 6th Mass. Infy., 4/15/1861, and was mustered out 8/21861. He then enlisted and mustered into Co. “A”, 26th Mass. Infy, 10/18/1861. He was promoted Corporal 11/1/1862, and then to Sergeant, 2/1/1863, First Sergeant 1/1/1864, then to 2nd Lieutenant, 12/1/1864. Mustering out in Savannah, GA., 8/26/1863.
The 26th Massachusetts Infy., organized in August 1864, was attached to the 19th Army Corps and saw service in Louisiana, participating in the occupation of Forts Philip and Jackson during the capture of New Orleans, April 1862, ant later the Sabine Pass Expedition, Sept. 1863. Transferred east in the summer of 1864, the unit was engaged at Bermuda Hundred, and later during Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign at the Battles of Winchester, Cedar Creek and Fisher’s Hill. Following Lee’s surrender it was assigned provost duty in Savannah, GA, where it mustered out, 8/26/1865.
