This small card foretells the presidential election loss of George McClellan, depicting him preparing for a trip up “Salt River” (slang for losing an election).
Text along the bottom reads “The Democracy lay in the necessary stores for a Little Trip up Salt River./Affecting Parting between “Little Mac” and his Friends.” The cartoon implies McClellan will need a large store of whiskey for his “trip”, the 1860’s remedy for sorrow.
It is printed on a heavy card and mounted to a second heavy card, labeled on the reverse in pencil “1864 Election 250”. There is some very minor surface loss to the front in the upper left area near the flag, and typical but minor wear to the top edge of the paper. Overall measurements are 4.2” x 3.1”.
A neat piece of Election of 1864 history – one of the most consequential in US History. [cm][ph:L]
