Presented here is a Civil War-era newspaper engraving of the buildings of the Kennebec Arsenal in Maine. This is matted and framed alongside a plot plan of all the buildings. A very fine pair of illustrations detailing the arsenal. Frame measures 22” x 19”.
The Kennebec Arsenal is a historic site in Augusta, Maine. Established in 1827 in part because of border disputes with neighboring New Brunswick. During the Civil War Kennebec was listed only as an “Arsenal of Deposit” however, during the cold months when outside work could not be done, the workers were authorized to make small arms ammunition in 1861, 1862, and 1864. The arsenal property was garrisoned until 1901.
From the collection of author/publisher Dean Thomas and these images were published in “Round Ball to Rimfire” Part One. [jet][ph:L]
