These sheets include an attached stub and monthly coupons. Condition is good on all ten certificates retaining nice color. All have punched cancels. They were produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in accordance with the Civil War Tax Act of 1862. This act authorized a levy on businesses and occupations with gross receipts over $1,000 per year. Section 3 of the tax act stated that these taxes were to be paid by special tax stamps. These were the largest revenue stamps ever issued by the government at 14.75" x 7” and were printed from 1873 to 1885. These were canceled with a pie-shaped cancel by the Internal Revenue Service and sold as scrap paper in 1890 to Hiram Deats and E.B. Sterling. The stamps had three parts: the stub, which was retained when the stamp was issued, the coupons (twelve total, one for each month), and the stamp itself.
This lot of ten certificates includes five each for “Retail Liquor Dealer” and “Dealer in Manufactured Tobacco”. Years range from 1877 to 1884.
From the collection of author/publisher Dean Thomas. [jet][ph:L]
