This document notifies Bowdoin alumni of an event on August 31, 1852 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the college. Famed Civil War officer Joshua Chamberlain graduated the next day of this same year and the father of one of his closest friends is listed at bottom right – Professor A. S. Packard.
Paper is in fine condition with no tearing. Three horizontal and two vertical folds divide the paper into twelfths. The left edge shows some rough trimming, likely done when someone recorded a filing note on the reverse in oxidized period ink reading “Bowdoin Colledge (spelled incorrectly) / Letter / May 1852”. Dimensions are 7.8” x 10”.
An interesting and personal link to the life of Chamberlain and a rare relic of Bowdoin’s celebrated milestones. [cm] [ph:L]
