A well-preserved manuscript power of attorney executed by Jonathan Greene (also spelled Green), soldier, of the town of Candia, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, appointing John Bryant of Newmarket, Yeoman, as his irrevocable attorney-in-fact to collect all monies, pay, and paper evidences of debt owed to him for his service "as a soldier in the Army of the said United States in their late war with Great Britain."
The document authorizes Bryant to apply to Congress of the United States, to any officer or officers appointed by them, and to any individual state, town, selectmen, or their agents, to receive all sums due the grantor on account of his Revolutionary War service — and to execute receipts, acquittances, and discharges in Greene's name. Greene reserves the right to revoke the appointment at his pleasure.
Dated February 1793. Executed with the standard attestation: "Signed, sealed & delivered in the presence of —" The document carries the scrivener's legal notation: "The word 'Candia' was interlined before signing" — confirming the interlineation was made prior to execution.
The document retains its original docket panel on the verso, inscribed: "Powe. Att'y Jonathan Green for Candia 1793" — indicating it was retained by the attorney or a filing party after execution, consistent with standard 18th-century legal practice.
Format: Single folio sheet, manuscript in iron gall ink on laid paper, approximately 8" x 12½" unfolded. Horizontal fold lines, toning, and minor soiling consistent with age and use. Text fully legible throughout. Docket panel intact.
Historical context: This document reflects the well-documented post-war struggle by Revolutionary War veterans to collect back pay, bounties, and land warrants owed by a cash-strapped federal government. Powers of attorney naming local agents were the standard mechanism for rural New England veterans to navigate collection without traveling to state capitals. Candia, NH, in Rockingham County, is well documented as a community with significant Revolutionary War veteran population. [ss][ph:L]
