An original manuscript clothing transfer dated May 28, 1863, documenting the turning over of company quartermaster stores between two officers of the 10th Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Corps (P.R.V.C.) — also carried on the rolls as the 39th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.

Headed "Invoice of Q.M. Store transferred by Capt. Jos. B. Pattee, Co. B, 10th Regt. P.R.V.C. to Capt. Valentine Phipps, Co. E, 10th Regt. P.R.V.C. on the 28 day of May 1863," the single-page return itemizes five (5) flannel sack coats, marked "new." Below the tabulated list, Pattee certifies in his own hand that he has turned the articles over to Captain Phipps, signing boldly at the close: "Capt. Jos. B. Pattee, Co. B, 10th Regt. P.R.V.C." The verso is period-docketed and numbered as "Voucher No. 3."

Both officers named on the document went on to lead the regiment. Joseph B. Pattee (1834–1891), a native of Ottawa, Canada, residing at West Middlesex, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, entered service as a second lieutenant in June 1861 and had been promoted to captain only weeks before signing this return (April 22, 1863). He later transferred to the Field & Staff of the 190th Pennsylvania Infantry as lieutenant colonel, was brevetted colonel, and was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers on April 9, 1865. Capt. Valentine Phipps, Co. E, would assume command of the 10th Reserves in combat at the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864 after Col. Ira Ayer was severely wounded.

In late May 1863 the regiment was serving in the Defenses of Washington (3rd Brigade, Pennsylvania Reserves Division, 22nd Corps), having been withdrawn from the Army of the Potomac after Fredericksburg — context consistent with this routine resupply and reissue of clothing.

A clean, displayable example of a wartime quartermaster document with a desirable signature of an officer later brevetted to general's rank. Single leaf, approximately 8 x 10 inches, brown iron-gall ink, old mailing folds, light toning and scattered foxing as expected; fully legible. Housed in an archival sleeve and accompanied by a printed biographical research sheet on Pattee.  [SS][PH:L]
