An oval-form printed membership certificate for the Columbus Guards, the celebrated Columbus, Georgia militia company organized in 1835 and chartered by the Georgia Legislature in 1843. The company saw voluntary service in the Creek (Indian) War of 1836 and the war with Mexico in 1846-47, and would go on to furnish more volunteers to Confederate service than any other of the twenty-one companies raised in Muscogee County, fighting in some thirty-one engagements before surrendering at Appomattox with only two officers and eleven men remaining.

The certificate's obverse is headed "COLUMBUS GUARDS / COLUMBUS, GA. / 1835 / CREEK WAR 1836, / MEXICO -- 1847" above a blank "HONORARY MEMBERSHIP CONFERRED" form, with ruled lines left for the honoree's name, date (printed "186_," left unfilled), and signature lines for "Captain" and "Sec'y." The sheet is bordered by seven oval captain portraits identifying the company's line of commanders: Capt. Paul J. Semmes at the crown, flanked by Capt. John Forsyth, Capt. Jno. A. Urquehart, Capt. Jno. E. Davis, Capt. Robt. A. Ware, Capt. Philip T. Schley, and Capt. S.A. Bailey, with a vignette of a domed monument or pavilion at the base beneath a "HONORARY MEMBERSHIP" banner. Two of the officers pictured carry added historical weight: Paul J. Semmes commanded the Columbus Guards for over a decade before the war and rose to brigadier general in the Confederate army, mortally wounded leading his brigade at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863; Capt. John Forsyth appears likely to be John Forsyth Jr., who served as 1st Lieutenant of the company on its 1846 Mexican War muster roll (below) before going on to serve as adjutant of the 1st Georgia Regiment in Mexico, editor of the Mobile Register, U.S. Minister to Mexico, and Mayor of Mobile.

The reverse carries two complete printed muster rolls: "MUSTER ROLL, COLUMBUS GUARDS, June 13th, 1846," headed "MUSTERED IN SERVICE FOR MEXICAN WAR," listing the company's full Mexican War roster of officers and privates beside a small vignette of crossed muskets and flag captioned "Taken at Siege of Vera Cruz, March 14, 1847"; and "ROLL OF THE COLUMBUS GUARDS, March 1st, 1861," a second complete roster taken on the eve of the Civil War, with a portrait of Capt. Paul J. Semmes at the base.

Together the certificate and its two musters present a compact printed record of the Columbus Guards' service across three conflicts -- Creek War, Mexican War, and the opening of the Civil War -- evidently produced by the company in the early 1860s both to honor distinguished visitors with honorary membership and to commemorate its own muster history.

CONDITION  Die-cut oval sheet, approximately 8" x 9.5", printed on wove/card stock, toned and with scattered light staining consistent with age. Small edge losses/chips along the left margin (visible in accompanying photos); otherwise complete and fully legible. Certificate form unfilled/unissued.
