Antique piece of sheet music, "Virginia Washington Monument. Grand March. Composed in honor of the Erection of the Washington Statue, Feb. 22 1858, by James E. Magruder." Published by Miller & Beacham, Baltimore, with lithography by A. Hoen & Co. Measures approximately 10" x 13".

The cover features a detailed lithographic view of the newly-unveiled equestrian Washington Monument at Capitol Square in Richmond, Virginia, showing the mounted figure of Washington atop the pedestal flanked by statues labeled LEE and JEFFERSON, with period figures gathered at the monument's base. The statue of Washington and three lower-tier statues were unveiled on February 22, 1858, sculpted by Thomas Crawford (later completed by Randolph Rogers). This march was composed specifically for that dedication ceremony.

Interior pages contain the full musical score, four pages plus cover, with light period pencil fingering annotations throughout. Condition shows expected wear for an 1858 piece: chipping and separation along the spine/fold, edge tears and loss (particularly along the left margin), scattered foxing and staining, and a small area of loss at the lower right corner. Complete and legible throughout, with a wonderful period lithographic view suitable for display or framing.  [ss][ph:L]
