DESCRIPTION: Manuscript Descriptive List and Account of Pay and Clothing for Pvt. A.J. McClendon, Company K, 47th Alabama Infantry, on a printed government-style form completed in period ink. The form records the soldier's physical description — age 25, gray eyes, height 5'8" — and birthplace as Georgia. An endorsement in a second hand documents a clothing requisition dated September 30, 1864, charging the soldier for one pair of steel-tipped brogan shoes and one pair of cotton stockings, approved by a company officer. The sheet is certified as a correct transcript from the company records, dated October 12, 1864, and signed by the commanding officer.
The 47th Alabama Infantry served in the Army of Northern Virginia, seeing action at Second Manassas, Antietam, Gettysburg, and through the Overland and Petersburg campaigns. Descriptive lists of this type are useful for tracing individual soldiers' physical characteristics, origins, and quartermaster charges.
CONDITION: Expected fold lines and toning consistent with age; docketing and certification text legible; minor edge wear. [ss][ph:L]
