This manuscript contains eight lines of Kurrent (German cursive) script on a large sheet of revenue-stamped paper. A large, circular “10” fiscal stamp is impressed at upper center, which incorporates a heraldic device and represents the government tax associated with the sheet. The stamp itself is a piece of German pre-unification history, as the document’s 1840 date predates the German Empire by over 30 years. As such, this document is original to one of a number of kingdoms, duchies, territories, or free cities that each had their own systems and practices.
The content focuses generally on the real estate holdings of a man named George, payments and fees for carpentry, and notation of filing with a government clerk. Additionally, an elaborate official’s title and signature are noted just below the 1840 date. Docketing notations appear at lower left and upper right. All ink is nicely and appropriately oxidized with attractive calligraphy. Paper is fine quality, embossed at upper left, and a medium weight. Condition is very good. Very minor foxing and discoloration compliment the age of the piece and no major damage is observed. Piece was mounted at one time, as evidenced by pinholes at the vertical center fold. Under lighting, several watermarks are visible – a Crown symbol over “WR”, an “H G S” countermark, and an “S P” countermark. These are likely the stamps of the paper manufacturer and retailers. Paper is one large sheet measuring 15” x 12.7”, folded vertically at center, with a pronounced horizontal fold. Writing is only on the front face half of the vertical fold, leaving the other three “pages” blank.
A rare piece of ephemera from the years leading up to the Revolution of March 1848. [cm][ph:L]
