Copper-engraved map titled "Map of the South of Sweden; shewing the route pursued by the Author, from the place of his landing, Helsingborg, until his arrival at Gefle; the situation of the Wener & Wetter Lakes, &c. &c." Signed in the plate at lower right "H. Mutlow, sculp." Scale given in Svenska Mijl (Swedish miles), with latitude 56 and 57 and longitude graduations marked in the border, which is a triple rule with dotted degree divisions.
The map covers Sweden from Skane in the south to the Stockholm and Uppland coast in the north, with the islands of Oland and Gotland, and Seeland (Zealand) and the Danish side of the Sound at lower left. Rivers, lakes, roads and towns are engraved, and the provinces and administrative divisions (hundreds, or harader) are lettered in the period English spelling. Lakes Vanern and Vattern appear as the "Wener" and "Wetter" Lakes, as the title promises. The title wording identifies it as a plate from a published travel narrative, very likely Thomas Thomson, Travels in Sweden during the Autumn of 1812 (London: Baldwin, 1813), a work that includes folding maps; this attribution has not been checked against the book's list of plates.
Sheet measures 11 1/4 x 17 inches.
CONDITION
Even toning with scattered brown foxing and staining, most noticeable across the upper portion and the lower margin. Old folds, with a horizontal fold below the plate and a vertical fold at right. The upper right corner of the sheet is cut at an angle. The engraved image is clear and complete. [ss][ph:L]
