Send the three men of the Eutaw to Hampton Roads by the Baltimore at 3 o'clock

A. N. Smith

Chf Bu[reau] adjt [Adjutant]"

The order was directed to Commodore John B. Montgomery, who commanded the Washington Navy Yard during 1864–65 — placing this telegram squarely within his tenure. The USS Eutaw was a 1,173-ton Sassacus-class double-ended steam gunboat built at Baltimore and commissioned in July 1863, assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron for service on the Potomac and James Rivers. This brief operational order — routing three of her crew to Hampton Roads — reflects the routine but constant personnel shuffling that kept the blockading squadron's gunboats manned during the spring 1864 campaign season, shortly before Eutaw's active role covering the Army's landing below City Point in May 1864.

Overall excellent condition.  Fold lines; light toning along edges.  One small hole at upper left.   [ss][ph:L]
