SET OF TWO 29TH DIVISION D-DAY SCENES BY JAMES DIETZ

Set of two works of art depicting the first wave of the 29^th Infantry Divisions assault on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

The print, done by James Dietz, shows the chaos of an opposed amphibious landing. Barely visible in the distant right background are support ships and landing craft. The support ships bombard the beach while the landing craft move towards shoe. In the near background among the bent and twisted dragons’ teeth are several burning and smoking landing craft that have been hit by German mortar and artillery fire. The rest of the background is blocked by the black smoke and fire from the burning landing craft and the spouts of water spraying up from the detonation of mines, mortar rounds and artillery shells. Mixed among these are the smaller spouts of water caused by the heavy incoming small arms fire. In amongst this inferno are the men of the 29^th Infantry Division making their way ashore. Some are moving forward with determination while others are giving direction or hunkering down in the beach sand for protection. Still others are struggling through water waist deep to reach the beach while many around them are being wounded and killed.

Across the top of the print is a Normandy Campaign streamer with gold invasion arrowhead and at bottom of the print are the regimental crests for the units within the 29^th Division. At bottom center is the blue/gray sphere insignia of the 29^th Division with the print title “29 LET’S GO!” The print is signed by the artist and numbed 180/1000. Unfortunately there is no certificate present with the print.

The full color print comes ready to hang in a wood frame that meas. approx. 41.75 x 28.25 inches. Print is triple mated in OD green, over gray, over blue. The condition of the print and frame is excellent.

Also, with the print is the framed and matted artist pencil sketch showing his original idea for the print before painting the actual scene. There are some subtle differences between the artists original conception and his final work. This pencil sketch is also framed and mated and meas. approx. 43.00 x 21.00 inches. Sketch is signed by the artist.  [AD] [PH:L]
