This beautiful hand painted image shows a mother holding her blue-eyed child close to her. Between them is a bouquet of roses, symbolizing innocence and purity. Artist’s signature is at the lower right, but is not totally legible.

Image is housed under glass in a tortoise shell case. A brass ring surrounds image. Brass ring for hanging is at the top. Case is free of chips or cracks.

Portrait miniatures first appeared in the 1520s, at the French and English courts. In the 18th century, portrait miniatures were painted with watercolor on ivory, which had now become relatively inexpensive. Portrait miniatures were now an established genteel pastime, and often used as personal mementos or as jewelry or snuff box covers. Miniatures remained highly popular until the development of daguerreotypes and photography in the mid-19th century.  [sl] [ph:L]
