This framed lithograph was created during the First World War and is dated 1916.  Andreas Gering's etching "Friedensglocken" ("Peace Bells") reflects his own traumatic war experiences and the young artist's confrontation with death at the age of just 24. Andreas Gering suffered from speech disorder after being buried alive during a bombardment from which he was retrieved seriously injured. He subsequently worked often about death, depicting its proximity in a soldier’s life. Andreas Gering was born in 1892 and the iron cross 2nd class surmounted upon the lithograph is alleged to actually be his but that cannot be proven. But together they make a real statement. The lithograph which measures 10 by 14 inches is unblemished and the iron cross 2nd Class is untouched and uncleaned and has its original ribbon. Frame measures 15 1/2" x 18 1/2". Very interesting.
