Artists Proof sculpture, dated 1991, number AP of 750. Measures 10 x 9 x 4”, weighs approximately 14 pounds on a marble base. Features Roman Nose (Woo-ka-nay), Cheyenne, ca. 1835-1868. Excellent condition.
History of the subject: *Roman Nose was born in about 1830. A Cheyenne warrior, he was originally given the name Woquini. As a young man, a medicine man, White Bull, made him a special war bonnet with eagle feathers. White Bull told him that the bonnet would protect him from his enemies' arrows and bullets provided that he obeyed strict taboos and carried out certain rituals. Roman Nose remained at peace with the white settlers and soldiers until the Sand Creek Massacre. He became one of the leading figures in the revenge attacks for the Massacre. He was at the Battle of Platte River (July, 1865) and the attack on the Powder River Expedition (September, 1865). He opposed the construction of the Union Pacific railroad and carried out raids on the men working on the line. In September 1868, Roman Nose was killed at the Battle of Beecher Island.
Explanation of the process: An Array of Hot-Torched Acid Patinas Legends originals arrive at the foundry in the form of plastiline - the result of the artists' sculpting, and resculpting, soft clay. From these originals, working models are created. Each sculpture is sectioned into a myriad of component parts and placed into molds for the creation of individual cavities, a process that helps Legends achieve the detail and form which are the trademarks of every Legends Mixed Media sculpture. Once the metals have solidified in the molds and are released, the component parts are soldered together to form the final shape of the sculpture. Meticulous hand work with fine stainless-steel tools recover detail lost in the soldering process. At that point, the sculpture is oxidized to a deep black patina and hand-relieved with a combination of steel wool and sand, before it is bathed in precious metals and various acid patinas. In finishing, the sculpture is sent through a comprehensive quality control system to ensure that the authenticity and artists' original detail are always maintained.
Christopher Pardell began sculpting at the tender age of four, and by his teenage years, Pardell had come to the realization that sculpting was to become his life's work. Influenced by the work of renowned sculptors Russell, Remington and Rodin, Pardell wanted to pursue his passion for realism. His formal education was laid aside in favor of an apprentice moldmaker position with a commercial statuary company, and it was there that he received what he considers to be his "real education in art." As an apprentice to the Italian master artisans who ran the statuary, Christopher rapidly learned the skills that would enable him to excel as an artist and earn the stature that has come with his success. Never sketching his designs on paper, Christopher composes all of his work in three dimensions, in a maquette. This unique approach explains the unparalleled beauty and detail that are the trademarks of his work. Christopher’s exceptional style and special talent have served to impress even the most discriminating collector. Currently, his artwork can be found in public and private collections throughout the world. [ld] [ph:m]
