A very good condition, framed, 1815 dated print captioned at bottom, LIEUT GEN SIR THOS PICTON. Picton is shown mounted, a collapsed telescope in his right hand with finger extended forward, clearly alluding to his death at Waterloo, where the attack of his division halted the advance of a French corps and last words were, “Charge! Charge! Hurrah! Hurrah!”

Born in 1758, he joined the army in 1771, served at Gibraltar, retired for a number of years and then saw action again in the wars of the French Revolution, becoming Governor of Trinidad after the British took that island, earning a reputation and some legal trouble for his brutality, and engaging in the slave trade on the side. Service under Wellington in the Peninsular Campaign offered some chance for redemption in the public eye and when Napoleon returned from Elba, Wellington gave him a division command. He was wounded at Quatre Bras, which he kept secret, and was killed while counter charging D’Erlon’s advance near La Haye Sainte.

The print is in excellent condition with good color, a small bit of foxing to the figure’s left, and is nicely matted, framed, and ready to hang.  Frame measures 21” x 18 ½”.    [sr] [ph:L]
