This piece of scrimshaw was made from a whale's tooth. It measures approximately 5.5" long by 2" wide at the base. One side features an engraving of a flying fish. Other side shows a woman and the name, "RACHEL PRINGLE OF BARBADOES".  Barbados is known as "the land of the flying fish". Light surface cracks are present but item is solid.

Scrimshaw is the name given to scrollwork, engravings and carvings done in bone or ivory. It more typically refers to the handiwork created by whalers out of the bones and teeth from whales. The making of scrimshaw began on whaling ships between 1745 and 1759 on the Pacific Ocean, and survived until the ban on commercial whaling. The practice continues as a hobby and as a trade for commercial artisans.  [sl] [ph:JET]
