This is a nice oil portrait signed and dated 1907 by the artist. The subject is a full colonel, shown from the mid-chest up, wearing a Civil War era regulation field officer’s double breasted frock coat, with four buttons visible in each row, and a silver eagle on a dark blue ground visible in each gold bullion embroidered shoulder strap. This was certainly done from a period photograph and meant to commemorate the sitter’s earlier service. We have a number of other examples where a family or the veteran himself wanted a formal oil portrait showing him in his prime and during what was likely the most important experience of his life. Some diligent searching in Roger Hunt’s magisterial Colonels in Blue might reveal some candidates or identify the sitter, though the painter may have neatened him up a bit or taken some artistic license. We have not deciphered the artist’s signature, but doing so might provide a starting point from his location of work.

The condition is very good. We see just some scattered stains and one small patch on the reverse. The portrait is housed in an ornate gilt wood frame.  [sr] [ph:m/L]
