This image was taken from a painting by S.B. Waugh and an engraving by William Sartain. This piece was likely printed by a Philadelphia firm in 1866 and remains affixed to its original mounting card. In the wake of the President’s assassination, a widespread movement to mass-produce Lincoln and family-related art prints sprung up among retailers eager to capitalize on the emerging national mourning and memory market.
The mounting card measures 8” x 10” while the image itself is 6” x 8.4”. Some scattered surface dirt and discoloration is noted along the left edge of the card, with an area of slight staining and foxing at low right (image remains in excellent condition). The revere is largely blank with scattered but minor foxing, a penciled “1865”, and “By S.B. Waugh” in blue, more contemporary ink.
A period frame with gold finish and period glass holds the image for display, with four antique cut nails and a more modern pressed nail holding the contents in place (three of the cut nails have been driven trough the frame and do not serve a functional purpose – but are present).
A nice piece of post-assassination history, ideal for the Lincoln collector. [CM] [ph:L]
